The rump comes from, well, the rump. It is made up of a number of really tasty, tender muscles. The muscles are separated by sinew and connective tissue and this is the reason that rump is somewhat unfairly thought of as chewy, as the meat is really quite tender.

Rump is the all purpose cut; it’s not awesome at anything but there’s nothing it can’t do. Jack of all trades but master of none.
