It’s been a long wait since Buster the stallion visited us last summer but the newest addition to the farm, Tinker, has finally arrived. It’s been a lot of fun getting to know her over the last couple of weeks, she’s getting more and more playful and her personality is really starting to develop. But along with the fun and games training has begun.
Foals are a little different to puppies and kittens. Not only are they born with almost fully developed sight and hearing but cognitively, they are capable of the same degree of learning as an adult horse. Their attention span is a lot shorter though so we’ve been keeping lessons to about 3 minutes. Tinker has now been touched and scratched all over, pushed around, had her feet picked up and things poked in her mouth, while we’re still stronger than her. We’ve started halter and lead training, in a week or so she’ll be too strong for us to manhandle so the plan is to have her trained to tie up by that stage.
Nearly every afternoon we take a beer up to the paddock and just watch her learning to run like the wind, so there’ll be no shortage of photos as she grows up.
